Children from six local primary schools have taken part in the city’s first Fashion Week organised by Hull City Centre Business Improvement District (BID). One winning design from each school has been manufactured into an adult T-shirt that will be part of the catwalk show on Saturday 1st May in the Unique Boutique Marquee, Queen Victoria Square, Hull city centre at 1.30pm. The winning designs have been judged by Kathryn Shillito, Hull City Centre BID Manager.

Kathryn said: “I am delighted so many schools and children have taken part in this exciting project. The T-shirts add another element to Hull BID’s Fashion Week and the packed programme in the ‘Unique Boutique’ in Queen Victoria Square on Friday 30th April and Saturday 1st May. I hope the children will enjoy seeing their designs on the models.”

The six primary schools involved are: Sidmouth Primary School Sidmouth Street Hull; Newland St Johns Primary School, Beresford Avenue Hull; St Nicholas Primary School Cottingham Road, Hull; Dorchester Primary School, Dorchester Road Bransholme; Thoresby Primary School, Thoresby Street, Hull and Pearson Primary School, Leicester Street, Hull.

Christine Cassanell has coordinated the schools’ involvement she said:” Each school received a pack with a template and instructions for the teachers to inspire the children to create an eye catching design. The project supports the key stage 2 art and design element of the curriculum, and all the children who took part in the competition will receive a certificate. The children have really enjoyed doing their designs and are excited to see the winning T-shirts.”

Hull BID Fashion Week starts on Thursday 29th April with a launch in St Stephen’s prior to their spring/summer fashion show, one student from the Fashion Design and Interpretation course at Hull College will be crowned Stylist of the Year after a month-long contest throughout April which saw them compete to be one of three finalists to have outfits featured in the fashion show.

The ‘Unique Boutique’ Fashion Marquee in Queen Victoria Square will open on Friday 30th April and Saturday 1st May showcasing the best of the independent shops in the city. Each independent retailer has been asked to contribute two outfits for the fashion show; there will be competitions and makeovers as well as style advice and entertainment. Paul and Rosie from Viking FM’s Breakfast Show will be providing the musical support for the event. This marquee will act as a hub promoting all the other events taking place in the city.

Christian Richardson and Alex Young have been crowned ‘The Face of Fashion’ as part of the BID Fashion Week events. They have each won the ultimate head to toe makeover worth over £700 courtesy of House of Fraser and Originals Hair Rooms, which includes clothes, accessories and shoes, plus hair makeover, style, cut and colour worth £700. They will both appear on the catwalk at 3.45pm on Saturday 1st May to show their new look to the public.

Last year the BID held ‘Looking Good Feeling Great’ which helped to increase footfall by 24,903, this Fashion Week will be an even bigger event and should really make the city centre buzz.

Princes Quay will be using their atrium space and escalators for three themed fashion shows on Saturday 1st April, House of Fraser and Marks & Spencer are all playing a part and Debenhams will be hosting its Capsule Wardrobe sessions as well as live makeovers in the store windows.
