EYMS joins fight against graffiti

Local bus firm East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) has joined the city's fight against graffiti.

EYMS has signed up to the Hull Against Graffiti campaign, which is a project being run by Hull City Council, Humberside Police and a number of other key partners.*

Mark Cornall, Hull City Council's environmental crime unit manager, said: "I am pleased that EYMS has joined the Hull Against Graffiti campaign. This shows the business community recognises they have a major part to play in helping the city fight graffiti.

"Recording any graffiti on the EYMS fleet through the Hull Against Graffiti database is another way of helping us to identify offenders and take action. I hope this will encourage other Hull businesses to take part in the campaign."

In the past 30 days, 190 pieces of graffiti have been recorded and logged in the city, with the highest level of graffiti being recorded in the Marfleet area (69 incidents).

Peter Shipp of EYMS added: "Although we don't suffer too badly from graffiti on our buses, any we do get is unpleasant for passengers and costs money to remove, especially if the bus has to be taken out of service to do so.

"I am pleased that EYMS is one of the first private businesses to be invited to join the partnership and very much hope it will help to reduce this unpleasant and anti-social activity."

Other ways in which businesses can help tackle graffiti is by reporting it to the Hull Against Graffiti website http://www.hullagainstgraffiti.co.uk or on 300 300 and removing it from their property as soon as possible.

Businesses that sell aerosol paints also have a legal obligation under the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003 to restrict the sale of aerosol paints to certain people. This law was introduced to reduce criminal damage in the form of graffiti, by limiting the opportunity for children and young people to buy spray paints which could be used for graffiti.

The Act makes it an offence for people to sell an aerosol paint container to anyone under the age of 16 years.
