Hull to showcase city’s culinary delights July 29-31
Apprentice chefs wanted for ‘Copper Saucepan Award’
Hull city centre’s Business Improvement District, Hull BID, is launching its own Food Festival this summer called Yum! Hull BID’s Festival of Food & Drink. It will be a high profile three-day event running Thursday 29, Friday 30 and Saturday July, celebrating the best in local produce.
The festival will be a celebration of the food and culinary talent right on the doorstep. As a Hull BID funded event, local businesses are at the heart of the festival and have been given the opportunity to have a food stall in the aptly named “Tasty Tent” or put forward one of their chefs to do a live demonstration in the Chefs Theatre. .
City Centre Manager Kathryn Shillito said: “Hull BID wants to encourage people to visit the city to experience all we have to offer in terms of shops, restaurants and cafes.
“Events such as Yum! are important in showcasing the variety and quality of operators in the city centre as well as local food producers in Yorkshire.
To add an extra dimension to the festival, Hull BID is bringing the popular Continental Market back to the city alongside its monthly Farmers Market. These markets, running the length of King Edward Street and onto Queen Victoria Square, will complement the extensive Yum! programme. Shoppers can expect an exciting range of interesting products from French tarts and patisseries to German and Greek delicacies as well as a Polish Beer Tent.
Yum! is being organised on behalf of Hull BID by city centre based Fred Marketing. Director Emma Pearson Kendall commented: “The plans for Yum! are coming together really quickly; we are very excited about the range of participates and variety of activity at this event.
Ms Shillito added “There will be a children’s Bite Size Family themed marquee in Trinity Square offering hands on experience and a Tasty Tent on Princes Dock Side, adjacent to Princes Quay, which will have a Chefs Theatre compared by Hairy Biker’s BBC series producer Gerard Baker, with local chefs cooking their signature dishes.”
Whitefriargate and Posterngate will feature food stalls, street entertainment and music; local sports mascots will be challenged to a cook off and a local food trail around various city venues will offer free samples and some great prizes.
The launch evening on Thursday 29 July will feature an 18+ comedy event called ‘Meat N 2 Veg’ in the marquee on Princes Dock Side, the comedy act will be announced very soon.
Finishing touches are currently being made to the programme and will be posted to the festival web site as they are finalised at www.yumfestival.co.uk. Festival guides will be distributed by the Yum! promotional team.
The main festival events will take place 10am – 4pm from Thursday 29 – Saturday 31 July and the comedy night, will be from 7.30pm on Thursday 29th.
