Hull gets with apprenticeships

A week of events and information days are set to get underway from this weekend for young people who are thinking about becoming an apprentice.

Hull City Council's Hull Training team are hosting a series of events, starting this Saturday (4 February) as part of Apprenticeship Week 2012. Hull's events include information events, demonstrations, a cooking competition and a Hull MP and councillor getting 'back to the floor'.

The week long events also aim to encourage local employers to consider taking on a young apprentice, explain the benefits and talk about the talent that is on offer.

An information event will be held on Saturday 4 February in Queen Victoria Square, Hull from 10am to 3pm (weather permitting). The event will include demonstrations from the catering team, have-a-go activities such as assembling a model bridge, and the chance to have a chat with people from the Hull Training team. Visitors can also find out more about the opening evenings that will be taking place throughout the following week.

Open evenings for the individual courses will be held at the specialist training sites as follows:

  • Tuesday 7 February, 5 - 8pm, Construction, Beverley Road;

  • Wednesday 8 February, 5 - 8pm, Hospitality and Catering, and Foundation Learning, Raywell Street;

  • Thursday 9 February, 5 - 8pm, Business Administration, Customer Services and IT, Goulton Street;

  • Friday 10 February, 4 - 8pm, Engineering and Signmaking, Orchard Park;

Councillor Helene O'Mullane, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, said:

"For young people who may be unsure whether to learn a skill or go straight into employment, an apprenticeship is the ideal solution.

"In Hull we have a good range of courses for young people who want to learn valuable skills in the workplace whilst training for a nationally recognised qualification and also earn a wage.

"Apprenticeships not only benefit young people, for the employer the apprentices may aid them in the growth of their business, increase productivity and close any skills gaps they may have to help remain competitive. For companies taking on 16 - 18 year old apprentices funding is available for the training so employers only need to pay the salary."

On Thursday 9 February managers from the Hull Traning team will take part in a 'Get Ready to Cook' competion at the Raywell Street site. Diana Johnson MP will also be taking part as a special guest.

Back to the Floor will take place on Friday 10 February closing the week long events. Alan Johnson MP and Councillor Martin Mancey (portfolio holder for Environment & Transport, and Emergency Planning) will work alongside apprentices at the Fresh Leaf cafe in the Central Library from 12.45 - 1.15pm. Then the leader of Hull City Council Councillor Stephen Brady will work with the Library Assistant Apprentices in the Central Library from 12noon - 2pm.
